The Pink & Lily

History

Well, for a start, it is a strange name for a pub isn't it? The story so far...

Until the very early 19th century the building which is now The Pink & Lily was a family home which was built during the 1700's. The house changed its guise to a hostelry early in the 1800's when two employees of the local Hampden family found themselves in a predicament that in those days was not altogether accepted. Mr Pink was the butler at Hampden House and Miss Lillie a chambermaid. They became romantically involved and Miss Lillie fell pregnant. Out of wedlock, they were shunned by the Hampden family and were forced to move out from "The Big House". They set themselves up locally and made their way as a hostelry. Soon Miss Lillie gave birth to a son who, in 1833 went on to become, at the place of his birth, the first registered landlord of what is now affectionately referred to as "The Pink". It was at this early stage, and for a reason still not known that their son renamed the pub as The Pink & Lily, perhaps belying the history of his mother's name.
